Main data

The starting system of the air type is used to start up the engines on the ground and in the air, for cold cranking, false start up and to abort starting.

It comprises the system which starts rotation of the engine rotor (APU, CB-78 air starter), ignition system and АПД-78А system of automatic starting sequence.

NOTE: If engine oil temperature is below–40°С engine start up is allowed only after it was preheated by hot air as described in operator’s manual.

 

СВ–78 air starter starts turbo compressor rotors rotation using compressed air provided by APU. After APU start up and after main engine start button was pressed АПД–78А system of automatic starting sequence activates СВ–78 air starter and ignition system. This is indicated by “START UP AIR PRES” light illumination.

The automatic sequence may be disengaged: The engine start up may finish:

– if TC RPM = 60…65% – fuel control disengages air starter;

- after 55 seconds АПД–78А system of automatic starting sequence is disengaged by timer even if TC RPM are below 60…65%;

- if TC RPM are >66% engine start up should be stopped by crewmembers (by closing shut off levers);

if СВ–78 air starter is not disengaged automatically, APU should be shut down.
