A recent experiment in the UK attempted to discover the world's funniest jok es.Dr Richard Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire invited people from an over the world to send in their funniest jokes and rate* the jokes sent in by other people. In the year of the experiment, the website received over 40,000 jokes and 2 million ratings*!

The experi men t showed ma n y things a bou t wha t d ifferen t na tiona li ties find fun ny. Ma ny Eu ropean countries, such as France a nd Den ma rk, preferred jokes about th i ngs we normally worry 16boiiftwithlof - for exa m ple, d ill ness a nd ma rriage. America ns and Canadia ns liked jokes where someone was better

2in/of/at something than someone else. Germans, in particular, seem

to be keen 3at/ on/about jokes. Overall th ey gave jokes the highest

scores.

Of cou rse, there is a serious reason for the research. Dr Wiseman is interested 4in/onlat how we comm u nica te. And h u mou r a nd

He said the popular jokes seem to have three elements: a stressful situa tion, we feel superior to someone i n the joke and we are

surprised 6of/by/in something in

the joke. Ma ny of t he jokes contained all three elemen ts. For exa mple, here is one of the most popula r jokes:

Two men areplaying golf one da_y. While they areplaying they see a

funeral procession *passing along the road nearby. One of the golfers stops, takes his cap off his head and closes his eyes. Hisfriend says: "Wow, that is the nicest, sweetest thin/!, I have ever seen. You really are a kind man. " Thefirst man answers: "Yeah, well,

we were marriedfar 35)'ears."

6 D Germa n people genera lly
