John Walter and John Logie Baird laid the foundations of the British media. John Walter published the first newspaper in 1784. It was called "The Daily Universal Register" and later it was renamed "The Times". John Logie Baird was a Scottish inventor who developed the early forms of television in the 1920s and 1930s.
Enrich Yourself! SB p. 124 (b) What TV channels are the most popular in Britain these days?
1) BBC1 is the oldest British government-controlled channel. It provides entertainment, news and current affairs. It shows programmes for every age group. 2) BBC2 is a sister channel to BBC1 which serves an older age group. It shows most of the documentaries and more informative programmes. 3) ITV is an independent British channel which serves the whole family. It shows programmes for special interest groups. 4) Channel 4 is another independent channel which broadcasts games, comedies and films. 5) FIVE is the newest channel which shows repeats and returns.
Enrich Yourself! SB p. 126 (c) What technological developments are coming in British television? There are teletext services which offer continually updated information. They have to be equipped with the necessary decoders. Another technological development in British television is providing subtitles for people with hearing difficulties. They are common on the BBC1, Channel 4 and the ITV companies. British tevision offers improved pictures to use either high definition or wide-screen television technology.

Newspapers, magazines, radio and television are all part and parqel of daily life in Britain. The British watch more television and listen to the radio more often than any people in Europe. They are also regular readers of newspapers. The foundations of the British media were laid by John Walter and John Logie Baird. In 1784 the bankrupted Lloyds underwriter turned printer and declared his intention "to publish a newspaper" and "The Daily Universal Register" — later "renamed" "The Times" was born. In the 1920s and 1930s the Scottish pioneer, John Logie Baird made the first television broadcasts. Today is the time of government-control- led broadcasting and cable TV. The most popular satellite channel is BBC1. It provides entertainment, news and current affairs for every age group. Among new technological developments in British television one can name teletext services and high definition television technology. The British media have always provided a lively forum for comment and debate on the issues of the day.

Satellite dish = a large circular piece of metal that receives satellite television broadcasts; technology = new machines and ways of doing things that are based on modern knowledge about science and computers; the Media = all the organizations that provide news and information for the public; channel = a television station and all the programmes that it broadcasts; teletext == a system of broadcasting written information on television; subtitles = the words printed over a film in a foreign language to translate what is being said by the actors; the broadcast = to send out radio or television programmes; to show repeats and returns = to broadcast a television or radio programme that has been broadcast before.

Simon: Where's the TV guide? Sarah: I've got it. Simon: Well, what's on the other channels? Sarah: A holiday and some documentary on animals. Simon: Really? Can I see that? Sarah: No! I'm waiting for my favourite quiz show. Simon: OK, fine. Watch the show, but then I want to watch something more interesting than just repeats and returns. Sarah: Good, so I'll let you check the updated information on the teletext now, and then you'll let me watch my favourite programme in peace. Simon: Great!
