The word “Cossack” meant a free and independent man. The first news about them date from the 15th century. They were engaged in fishing, hunting, bee-keeping and building settlements. In the 16th century the Cossacks united in a single military organization. They built the first permanent fortress, the Zaporizhian Sich. They defended the Southern Ukraine from Polish landlords and Tatars. They played an important role in the history of Ukraine.

Philip: No, I haven’t.

Journalist: After a month in Ukraine, what are your impressions of the country and people?

Philip: Oh, the trip was very exciting, informative and never dull a moment. Everyone wе’ve met has been friendly and nice.

Journalist: Do you feel that it’s possible to get to know the real Ukraine in such a short time?

Philip: Of course. We’ve visited so many places of interest, had many pleasant meetings with farmers and students, industrial workers and public figures.

Journalist: But tell me, what cities and towns have you been already to?

Philip: I’ve already visited Kyiv, Odessa, Kharkiv, Lviv, Poltava, Chernihiv. Now we are going to Zaporizhya.

Journalist: It’s very exciting. This place is closely connected with the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people for their freedom.

Philip: It’s so interesting.

Journalist: And what struck you most of all in this country?

Philip: Ukrainian people, their hospitability. They are so enthusiastic. That’s why I believe in the future of this country.
